St. Luke's Primary School
Bournemouth, Dorset
The striking design of this new energy efficient infant department hinges about a central corridor acting as both a hub to the school and dividing element between classrooms and hall, admin, and ancillary spaces. This spacious corridor, naturally lit from a series of rooflights, and naturally ventilated at high level, also accommodates cloakroom areas and storage.
South facing exterior walls to the classrooms are fully glazed, as are their entrances onto the internal corridor. This not only gives the classrooms a large degree of natural lighting and a pleasant transparent environment, but also allows the school to become a community rather than a series of individual classes.
The hall dominates one side of the corridor and is housed beneath a large barrelled roof. Views into and out from this space are allowed by glazed end panels which rise full height to meet with the curving roof line.
