Durban House Nursing Home
Romsey, Hampshire
Durban House was originally a large private house which has been converted to a nursing home and extended several times in the past century.
The existing home is desparately undersized, short of day spaces for the residents and lacking staff facilities. However numbers are rising. Hence there is a program of improvements and extensions to bring the facilities up to current standards.
This new Day Room is the first extension of the home to address the immediate need for more lounge spaces. A new entrance ramp and canopy was also constructed to allow disabled access to the main entrance.
The design of the extension is a modern interpretation of the existing original victorian house. Large overhanging slate roofs form impressive gables on two sides, which appear to float over feature brick bays. Glazing surrounds these bays, bringing plenty of natural daylight into the space.
