Coxlease School
Lyndhurst, New Forest
Coxlease School is a Boarding School for pupils referred by Local Authorities with behavioural difficulties. The school takes a total of 65 boys from 9-16 and are taught in varying small groups of no greater than 5. Average pupil to teacher ratio is 3 to 1.
The school are now looking at a significant expansion and upgrading of existing accommodation to meet the demanding needs of the pupils and the current National Curriculum. Of particular significance is the lack of specialist teaching facilities.
The site comprises the existing listed Coxlease House in a peaceful wooded setting at the centre of the New Forest. Much of the existing accommodation is temporary which requires replacement.
The design exercise currently being undertaken is to create a community of new buildings that will respond to the sensitive landscape and difficult terrain. A series of timber frame buildings are envisaged which will be predominantly timber clad. Within this simple Architectural framework there will be a language of repeated architectural forms with a common range of material and textures.
